Upper Mustang Trek will take us to the remote hidden paradise of Nepal. Trekking in Upper Mustang was opened for tourists since 1992. Upper Mustang is also known as the last forbidden kingdom of Nepal and offers gorgeous Trans-Himalayan landscape. The trail will include tree-less barren section, ascends & descends on steep rocky paths, and enchanting views of Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m),  Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Mt. Nilgiri.

Our trek begins from Jomsom and goes all the way up to Drakmar (3,810 m), and ends at the same place where it begins. No doubt the trail will be adventurous and little challenging.

Day to Day Itinerary

You will arrive at the Tribhuvan International Airport where you will meet with one of our representatives. He will take you to your hotel in a private tourist van/bus. You will rest for the day, and in the evening, you will have a traditional welcome dinner with our crew members. You will also meet with your guide. 

    We will wake up early in the morning and have our breakfast. After that, we will go on the guided sightseeing tour where we will see the famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We will visit the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Later in the evening, we will prepare for our trek and do the last minute shopping if needed.

      We will head towards Pokhara another famous tourist destination of Nepal. The drive will present beautiful views of green hills, river, and small settlements. Upon reaching Pokhara, we will move to our hotel where we are going to stay for a night. In the evening, we will explore the Lakeside market and also do boating on the Fewa Lake.

        After having the breakfast, we will head to the airport to take our flight to the Jomsom. We will get to see spectacular views of hills and snow-capped mountains from the flight. Jomsom is one of the most beautiful regions of Nepal and also famous for its mouth-watering apples. From Jomsom, we will begin trekking towards Kagbeni. The trail will not be difficult and goes through small villages. Within a few hours of walk, we will reach Kagbeni where we will stay overnight.

          After our permits get checked by the authorities, we will begin trekking alongside the Kali Gandaki River. Further crossing sand amidst, we will ascend on a hill to reach the beautiful Tangbe Village. Here, we will see pretty alleyways, buckwheat & barley fields, white-washed houses, and apple orchards. After crossing another village and a river, we will trek along a ridge to reach Chele Village. 

            It's going to be a difficult as well as adventurous trail today as we will cross two passes Taklam La pass (3,624m) and Dajori La pass (3,735). On the way, we will see superb views of Tilicho Peak, Damodar Danda, and Yakawa Kang. We will also pass by Ramchung Cave and descend to reach Samar Village. From here, we will ascend on a ridge and again descend steeply towards Syanboche.

              We will begin ascending towards the Yamada La Pass located at 3,850 meters. On the way, we will cross small villages, chortens, and tea house. We will continue trekking through dense forests and barley fields to reach Nyi Pass (4,010 m). From here, we will descend towards one of the biggest village in this region, Ghami which is also our night stop.

                We will descend on a rugged and slippery trail. Then, we will cross a suspension bridge over the Ghami Khola and begin ascending towards the Tsarang La Pass at 3870m. On the trail, we will see numerous mani walls, and crossing Tsarang La Pass, we will reach Tsarang village. Tsarang village is located on the top of the Charang Chu canyon with a large fortress and a red gompa towards its east. We will stay overnight in this village.

                  We will descend towards a canyon, and further, cross a river. We will then ascend to the Lo La Pass (3,950 m) from where we will get to see spectacular views of the walled village. Today, we will see stunning views of Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m), Tilicho Peak (7,134 m), Mt. Nilgiri (7,061 m), and many other mountains. We will stay overnight in Lo-Manthang.

                    It is our rest day in Lo Manthang so that our body can get acclimatize with the increased altitude, and we don't have to suffer mountain sickness or any sort of health-related issues. We will spend our day exploring the village and its nearby areas. We will visit gompas like Jhampa, Chhoeda, and Thupchen. We will also trek to another beautiful village, Tingkhar located in the northwest of Lo Manthang. 

                      Today the trail will include Gyakar Village where we will get to witness centuries-old houses and Ghar Gompa with painted rocks. There is a saying that anyone who makes a wish here at the Gompa will surely get fulfilled. So, don't forget to make a wish who knows it might come true. Further, we will continue trekking towards Drakmar where we will stay overnight.

                        Today, we will begin our trek early in the morning to avoid the strong winds. We will descend most of the time and trail also goes through a dry plateau and fields. The trail will be challenging as we have to face strong winds on our face. We will amazing views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Mt. Nilgiri upon reaching Ghiling. We will stay overnight at Ghiling.

                          We will begin our day with a warm breakfast and begin trekking on the same trail which we used to reach Lo Manthang. The trail will again present us amazing views of the Himalayas and lovely villages. We will reach Chhuksang where we will be staying for the night. 

                            It's our last day of trekking. After walking for a while we will reach at an end of Mustang trails, and from here, we will join the Annapurna Circuit trail. We will trek for a few hours and reach Kagbeni where we will take a small break for the lunch. Further, we will trek on a beautiful trail to reach Jomsom for a night stay.

                              After having breakfast, we will take a flight back to Pokhara. The flight will offer mesmerizing views of snow-capped mountains and hills. Upon reaching Pokhara, we will move to our hotel. We will rest for a bit and later explore the nearby areas. We will visit David's Fall, Mahendra Cave, Bat Cave, and end our day strolling in the lively Lakeside. 

                                We will drive back to Kathmandu after having the breakfast. We will drive back on the same route as we came so we will once again get to see beautiful views of rivers, small settlements, and lush green hills. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we will head to our hotel. Rest of day is free for us to rest or explore the nearby areas. If we have missed any landmark last time, we can also visit. We will end our day with a delicious farewell dinner where we will be going to talk about our trip and the best moments in Nepal. 

                                  It's time to say goodbye to each other with lots of unforgettable memories. Once we will have our last breakfast, we will check out from the hotel, and head to the airport to take our flight back to our home.

                                    Tradition & Culture in Upper Mustang

                                    Upper Mustang is mostly influenced by Tibetan Buddhists culture and also known as the Mini-Tibet of Nepal. We will get to witness ancient Tibetan Buddhist shrines, chortens, prayer walls, centuries-old monasteries, and kaanis. We will interact with locals and also experience their lifestyle, tradition, and culture.  The people residing here are one of the kindest and most welcoming so don't feel shy to interact with them. Moreover, the isolation of this region has contributed immensely to conserve the cultural heritage and tradition for centuries.


                                    We will be staying in 2 or 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. During the Upper Mustang Trek, we will stay in teahouse. Teahouse is basically a combination of hotel and lodge. The room will be small with little furniture, bed & blanket. All the accommodations are on a twin-sharing basis. On special request, single rooms can be arranged in the cities. However, single rooms might not be available all the time due to the limited service on higher elevations. Please understand that the services in the teahouse will be very basic and also all the teahouse does not come with attached washrooms.

                                    Meals & Drinking Water

                                    In Upper Mustang Trek, we will enjoy authentic Nepalese food with few other cuisines like Tibetan, Indian. Meals will be served as per the menu of the teahouse. Beside that you can find bars, bread, cookies, butter tea, extra on the trail but, remember as the elevation get higher, the cost also gets high. In Kathmandu and Pokhara you will only get breakfast. There will also be welcome and farewell dinner for you.

                                    Drinking water can be easily found everywhere. You can get hot water from the teahouse and fill in your bottle everytime it gets empty. So, do carry a reusable water bottle with yourself. We request you to not buy mineral water bottle on the way as it will help in preserving the region. Moreover, you can also carry water purifier tablets or SteriPen with yourself to purify the water.

                                    Upper Mustang Trek Difficulty & Physical Fitness

                                    Upper Mustang Trek is a moderate trek. The trails are not so difficult and challenging in terms of technical climbing but, do includes 5-6 hours of walk each day. Therefore you need to be passionate and in good health. Trekking to the higher altitude always demands average physical fitness, positive attitude, and a strong determination. If you have any previous hiking or trekking experience it would be great but, it's not mandatory to go on Upper Mustang Trek.

                                    Other than that, if you have any kind of health related issues then do consult with your doctors before booking the trip. In case of any medical history, we highly recommend you to inform us so that any future event can be tackled without having any issue.

                                    Best Season to go on Upper Mustang Trek

                                    Spring (March to May) and Autumn (last September to November) are the best seasons to go the Upper Mustang Trek. In Monsoon during the Tiji festival, one can also go on this trek. During the winter the climate become harsher still trek can be done but, this time of the year might not be suitable for everyone.

                                    Upper Mustang Trek Permit

                                    Upper Mustang is one of the restricted regions of Nepal, and tourists are required to get certain permits to enter in this region. Moreover, many parts of the trail also lie in the Annapurna Conservation Area which, also demand one more permit.

                                    Besides that to go on trekking in Nepal you need to get special permission from the Government of Nepal, and also required to get TIMS card (TIMS cards is not needed if you have immigration permit).

                                    Following is the list of permits for the Upper Mustang Trek:

                                    Upper Mustang restricted area permit for foreigners: USD 500 per person for the first 10 days & USD 50 per day thereafter.

                                    ACAP permit fee for foreigners: 2,000 NPR (Around USD 20)

                                    ACAP entry permit fee for SAARC nationals: 200 NPR (Around USD 2)

                                    TIMS permit: 1,000 NPR (Around USD 10)

                                    TIMS entry permit fee for SAARC nationals: 600 NPR (Around USD 6)
