Makalu to Everest Via 3 cols Trek is one of the most challenging treks in the Himalayas. We will cross several high passes in which two of them are above 6,000 meters above. The trek will allow us to traverse between the Makalu and Everest range. Makalu is one of the rarely visited trails of the Himalayas which makes the region raw and authentic. All the part of the trail will not include tea house or lodge and we will be camping and cooking by ourselves for several days. The trail will include numerous steep ascends & descends, rugged & rocky paths, gorgeous glaciers & glacial lake, pristine rivers, dense forest of rhododendron, pine & fir lovely small villages. We will get to see panoramic views of mountains like Mt. Everest (8,848 m), Mt. Makalu (8,481 m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m), Island Peak (6,189 m), Mt. Nuptse (7,861 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m), and several other mountains. Moreover, the Makalu Barun region is one of the protected region of Nepal which is habitat to around 3000 species of flowering plants including varieties of Himalayan Orchids. The region also includes 75 species of mammals and 440 species of birds. We may get to see wildlife like clouded leopard, musk deer, and Asian golden cat.

Day to Day Itinerary

We will take a flight to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu. The flight will be scenic, and upon reaching Tumlingtar, we will begin our drive towards Chiuribas. On the way, we will go through small settlements and reach Chiuribas where we will stay for the night.

After having breakfast, we will begin trekking towards Seduwa. The trail will easy yet tiring. On the way, we will go through small villages and forested trail. Upon reaching Seduwa, we will rest for the day and prepare for the next day.

We will ascend to a ridge bounded by the Ipsuwa Khola on the west and Kasuwa Khola on the east. Further, we will go through small villages and paddy fields to reach lovely Tashigaon village. We will get to see stunning views of Himalayas all around us, and stay overnight in Tashigaon.

Today, the trail will be a bit difficult as we will ascend on a steep trail. We will begin ascending through forested trail and reach a stream. We will continue ascending to reach a ridge, and from here, we will trek on the even steeper trail and cross a grazing land. Further, we will trek on a rough stone staircase, and passing by a small lake, we will again ascend to a ridge. After that, we will descend towards Kongma Danda.

Today is our first rest day to make our body acclimatized with the increased altitude. If we want to explore the nearby areas, we can go on a small hike and walk around. We will visit nearby villages and experience the lifestyle, culture and tradition of the locals residing here. No doubt, we will be surrounded by beautiful views.

We will ascend towards the Shipton La Pass. The trail will be not so difficult, and after that, the trail will take us to the Kalo Pokhari located at 3,930 meters. We will keep ascending, and reach another pass, KeKe La located at 4,170 meters. From here, we will get to see breath-taking views of Mt. Chamlang (7,321 m), Peak 6 (6,524 m), and Peak 7 (6,758 m). Further, we will descend through a beautiful valley and reach Debotay where we will stay for the night.

We will go through beautiful rhododendron forest which will lead us to the Barun River. The first couple of hours, the trail will be steep and rugged so we have to be careful while walking. We will take a small break to have lunch. We will then ascend gradually with superb views of mountains and surrounding. We finally reach Yangle Kharka located at the base of the valley where we will stop for the night.

We will begin trekking through yak pastures and a dense forest. The trail will be rocky, and on the way, we will go through small villages. We will reach Merek village, and as we move further towards Langmale Kharka, we will see brilliant Himalayan views. We will stay overnight in Langmale Kharka.

Today is going to be a very exciting day as we will be reaching our first base cam of this trek, Makalu Base Camp. We will wake up early and begin trekking towards the base camp. We will reach shersong from where we will see stunning views of Mt. Makalu, and from here, the trail will take us to the Makalu Base Camp. The trail will be mostly flat with icy glaciers and snow-capped mountains. Upon reaching the base camp, we will find ourselves surrounded by mountains all around us.

Today is our rest day at Makalu Base Camp. We will spend the day by exploring the base camp. Basically, Makalu Base Camp is a rocky barren region with the large Barun Glacier. We will get to see panoramic views of the south face of Mt. Makalu, Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, and many other mountains. We will hike to the surrounding lakes and glaciers and soak the beauty of the region.

We will begin ascending towards the Swiss Base Camp. The trail presents us beautiful views of snow-capped mountains like Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse and other several mountains. We will soon find ourself surrounded by snow all around us. On the way, we might meet with fellow trekkers.

It is our rest day at the Swiss Base Camp. We have already gained so much altitude and our body does need frequent acclimatization to get adopted with the altitude. We will spend the day hiking and learning a few climbing techniques from our Sherpa guides. We will explore the region and end our day with delicious food cooked by our crew members.

We will begin ascending gradually, and after around 30 minutes of the climb, we will enter into the glacial moraines. We will trek along the view of Barun Glacier in the right side of us. We will ascend and reach the bottom of a gulley. The trail will be rugged and covered with loose rocks. On the way, we will also see amazing views of Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse. We will reach Sherpani Col Base Camp where we will be staying for the night.

Today is going to be the longest and the most challenging day of the trek. We will ascend and enter the valley. At the end of the valley, there is a high wall and we will trek for around hours to reach the bottom of this wall. Once we will reach the top of the East Col, we will see it marked by several prayer flags. From here, we will ascend further on a glacier that leads to Barents Plateau. We will trek and reach at the end of the plateau, and from here, we will descend to reach Baruntse Base camp.

Leaving Baruntse camp behind, we will begin trekking towards the Honku Basin. The trail will be difficult as it includes ascend on the rugged path. We will see fantastic views of snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around us.

We will begin ascending towards Amphu Labsta Base Camp after having breakfast. The trail will be difficult and go through moraines and rocky-icy trail. We will see fantastic views of the Himalayas from the base camp. We will stay overnight in the base camp.

We will begin ascending through a rocky and ice trail. After reaching the top, we will descend steeply and reach Chhukung Valley. From here, we will again descend down in the valley and reach Chhukung Village where we will stay for the night. We will get to see the lifestyle, tradition, and culture of the people living this region and also interact with them.

After having breakfast, we will begin descending towards Chhukung. On the way, we will get to see superb views of Island Peak, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, and other surrounding mountains. We will go through forested trail and several small settlements. The trail will also bloomed with lovely rhododendron bushes. We will reach Dingboche where we will stay for the night.

Leaving Dingboche behind, we will begin ascending through rocky grassland and past several yak herder shelter. On the way, we will see beautiful views of Lhotse in the north and Ama Dablam in the south. We will reach Pheriche and from here the trail will take us to Lobuche our last destination for the day.

We will go through the moraine of Khumbu glacier along with enjoying the stunning panoramic views. We will get to see superb views of mountains like Mt. Everest, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Nuptse, and other several peaks. We will ascend further and go through the stream of Changri Glacier from where we will see the first view of Kala Patthar. From here, we will ascend all the way up to the Kala Patthar from where we will get to 360-degree views of Everest and other mountains. After enjoying some time here, we will descend back to Gorak Shep.

We will again wake up early and begin ascending towards the world famous Everest Base Camp. The trail will include ascending for the first half of the day through moraines, glacier, and glacier stream. Upon reaching Everest Base Camp, we will spend some time here and trek back to the Lobuche where we stay for the night.

After having breakfast, we will begin deciding through the small villages. On the way, we will go through rhododendron and pine forest. The trail will be going to include several ascends and descends. Going through small beautiful villages and forest of pine, fir & rhododendron, we will reach Namche Bazar, the entrance of the Khumbu Region. Namche Bazar is one of the biggest of Sherpas. We will find coffee shops, bookshops, hotels, lodges, monasteries here. We will spend the rest of the day enjoying the local food.

After having breakfast, we will begin descending all the way to Lukla. The trail will include several ascends & descends, dense forest of rhododendron, rivers, and small villages. Upon reaching Lukla, we will rest and prepare for our departure to Kathmandu with lots of memories. Today is also the last day we will get to see views of the Himalayas. We will explore the region and end day with delicious dinner.

After having morning tea, we will take a flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla airport. The flight we will be scenic and we will see the last views of the Himalayan mountains. Drinking water can be easily found everywhere. You can get hot water throughout the trek and fill in your bottle everytime it gets empty. So, do carry a reusable water bottle with yourself.
