Barely touched by the tourism, Khaptad National Park is a hidden treasure in the Far Western corner of Nepal. Due to its location, only countable number of tourists visit this place every year, which make this place perfect for the adventure junkies looking for a wilderness experience. Moreover, this is an ideal destination for one who wants to experience the raw nature away from the crowd.

Trek to Khaptad National Park will offer us diverse landscapes with rolling green hills, steep slopes, moorlands, and lovely streams. The national park has a huge variety of vegetation from the sub-tropical forest in the lower altitudes to temperate forests on the Khaptad plateau. It includes 567 species of flora including rhododendron, pine & oak forests, 23 species of mammals, and 287 types of birds. We can see animals like Himalayan black bear, leopard, musk deer, and wild dogs.


Day to Day Itinerary

We will head to the airport for our flight to Nepalgunj. The flight will be scenic, and upon reaching Nepalgunj, we will drive towards Buditola. We will drive along the longest river of Neal, Karnali River. After a few hours of the drive, we will reach Buditola where we will be staying for a night. 

    After having breakfast, we will drive towards Silgadhi. The drive will be long and scenic. Upon reaching Silgadhi, we will spend the rest of the day relaxing. 

      Today, we will begin trekking and our first destination is Jhigrana. After having breakfast, we will trek and reach Balek in three and a half hours where we will be stopping for a lunch. Further, we will again trek for around three and a half hours to reach Jhigrana. On the way, we will go through small villages and forest. 

        We will begin trekking after having breakfast. We will ascend for long hours and reach Bichpani Dharmasala (3020m). We will take a short break here for lunch. After that, we will continue ascending along with beautiful sceneries to reach Bukipani where we will stay for the night.

          The trail is short, and within a couple of hours, we will reach Khaptad. Upon arriving at Kapthad, we will have lunch and rest for a few hours. After that, we will visit the famous Khaptad Baba’s Ashram and explore the area. We will stay overnight at Kapthad.

            Today, we are going to visit Khaptad National Park. We will visit a museum, Khaptad Danda, and a tower. In the national park, we will get to see numerous variety of vegetations ranging from the sub-tropical forest in the lower altitudes to temperate forests on the Khaptad plateau. We will see rich species of flora & fauna, more than 224 species of medical herbs, 270 species of birds, various species of animals, and almost 11% of flowering plants of Nepal in one place.

              After having breakfast, we will trek back to the Jhigrana on the same trail as we came. We will descend through small villages and forested trail and reach Jhigrana where we are going to stay for a night.

                We will begin descending from Jhigrana towards Silgadi. On the way, we will pass through Uditola and other small villages. Within a more five hours of walk, we will reach Silgadi, our halt for the day.

                  We will wake up early in the morning, drive towards Dhangadhi. The drive will be scenic and mostly present views of small settlements and dense forests. Dhangadhi is a VDC (village development committee) in Siraha District. Upon reaching Dhangadhi, we will move to the hotel. 

                    Today, we will return back to Kathmandu. We have two options either fly or drive back to Kathmandu. Both options will present us scenic views. Upon reaching, Kathmandu we will rest for the day. In the evening, we will stroll in the lively streets of Thamel and end our day with the farewell dinner.

                      Tradition & Culture

                      Khaptad has got huge spiritual significance for the locals. It is believed that a renowned spiritual saint, Khaptad Baba has meditated here for 50 years. As a matter of fact, this region has also named after him. If you want to experience most of the cultural side of this region then, you should visit here during the full moon in July and August when Hindu pilgrims come here to worship  Lord Shiva in the Khaptad Baba Ashram.


                      We will be staying in 2 or 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj. During the Khaptad National Park Trek, we will stay in teahouse. Teahouse is basically a combination of hotel and lodge. The room will be small with little furniture, bed & blanket. All the accommodations are on a twin-sharing basis. On special request, single rooms can be arranged in the cities. However, single rooms might not be available all the time due to the limited service on higher elevations. Please understand that the services in the teahouse will be very basic and also all the teahouse does not come with attached washrooms.

                      Meals & Drinking Water

                      In Khaptad National Park Trek, we will enjoy authentic Nepalese food with few other cuisines. Meals will be served as per the menu of the teahouse. Beside that you can find bars, bread, cookies, butter tea, extra on the trail but, remember as the elevation get higher, the cost also gets high. In Kathmandu and Nepalgunj you will only get breakfast. There will also be welcome and farewell dinner for you. In case, if you are camping then all the meals are prepared by the porters.

                      Drinking water can be easily found everywhere. You can get hot water from the teahouse and fill in your bottle everytime it gets empty. So, do carry a reusable water bottle with yourself. We request you to not buy mineral water bottle on the way as it will help in preserving the region. Moreover, you can also carry water purifier tablets or SteriPen with yourself to purify the water.

                      Khaptad National Park Trek Difficulty & Physical Fitness

                      Khaptad National Park Trek is an easy trek. The trails are not difficult and challenging in terms of technical climbing but, do includes 5-6 hours of walk each day. Therefore you need to be passionate and in good health. Trekking to the higher altitude always demands average physical fitness, positive attitude, and a strong determination. If you have any previous hiking or trekking experience it would be great but, it's not mandatory to go on Khaptad National Park Trekking.

                      Other than that, if you have any kind of health related issues then do consult with your doctors before booking the trip. In case of any medical history, we highly recommend you to inform us so that any future event can be tackled without having any issue.

                      Best Season to go on Khaptad National Park Trek

                      September to December and March to May are the best seasons to go the Khaptad National Park Trek. The pleasant weather and clear sky make the journey joyful.

                      Khaptad National Park Trekking Permit

                      Khaptad National Park is one of the restricted areas of Nepal, and tourists are required to get certain permits to enter in this region.

                      Besides that to go on trekking in Nepal you need to get special permission from the Government of Nepal, and also required to get TIMS card (TIMS cards is not needed if you have immigration permit).

                      Following is the list of permits for the Khaptad National Park:

                      Khaptad National Park Entry Permit for SAARC nationals: NRs. 500 (USD 5) per person entry

                      Khaptad National Park Entry Permit for foreigners: NRs. 1,500 (USD 15) per person entry

                      TIMS permit: 1,000 NPR (Around USD 10)

                      TIMS entry permit fee for SAARC nationals: 600 NPR (Around USD 6)
