Dolpo Circuit Trek will take to you to one of the restricted and most isolated regions of Nepal. This trek will give you an opportunity to experience the lifestyle of people living in this remote region of the world. The trail includes diverse landscapes ranging from green pastures to barren rocks that are extended up to Tibetan plateau. Due to its isolation, very a few tourists visit this region every year, which make this trek perfect for travelers wanting to trek in the less crowded region. Although of all the limits of this region, we will get to experience the raw natural beauty, centuries-old monasteries, the striking Phoksundo Lake, and mountains like Annapurna Ranges (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m). We will get to see rare wildlife like snow leopard and many more. Moreover, this region got famous after it was shown in a documentary movie called, 'The Caravan' which was also nominated for Oscar Award in the best foreign language film category.

Day to Day Itinerary

We will take an hour-long flight to Nepalgunj after having the breakfast. Nepalgunj is located on the western side of Nepal, near the Nepal-India border. We will visit mini-zoo, local market, and explore the nearby villages. 

    Today, we are going to take another flight to Jhuapl, a beautiful town located in the Himalayan foothills with spectacular views of Annapurna Ranges (8,091 m) and Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m). From here, we will begin trekking through the terraced fields and reach Behri River. Further, we will continue trekking towards Dunai, the administrative headquarter of the Dolpo region. We are going to stay overnight in Dunai.

      We will begin trekking following the Bheri River and traverse through the hamlets settled by Terali Buddhist of Magar communities. The trail will offer gorgeous views of landscapes with beautiful pine trees surrounding the high hills and mountains. We will reach Byasgar and from here, the trail will become windy and rocky. Further, trekking on a narrow trail, we will reach the Lingdo village where we are going to stay for the night.

        We will ascend through the small settlements and reach in the dry and barren region. We will notice a big change in the vegetation. From here, we will reach Laisicap where we will see several lodges and teahouses. Further, we will trek through the large pine trees and ascend to reach Laina Odar our last destination of the day.

          We will trek through a dense forest of pine and go through beautiful waterfalls. Further, we will ascend towards the top of a hill. From here onwards, the green land changes into the arid and dry region. We will then descend steeply towards the confluence of two rivers and an hour trek from here will take us to Total where we will stop for the night.

            We will trek towards Dho. We will enter into a windy gorge. We will then ascend gradually toward a cliff. The trail will be steep and rocky. Upon reaching the top, we will see amazing views of the rivers and mountains. We will then descend and come across a narrow valley. From here, we will descend down to reach Dho village where we will stop for the night. 

              We will begin trekking, and on the way, we will visit a century-old gompa, Mekyem gompa. We will see a large state of an avatar of Buddha inside this gompa. Further, on the way, we will go through a local school and ascend towards the Gakar village where Phurba Dorje gompa is located. After visiting this gompa, we will trek and reach Numa La Phedi Base Camp crossing a few villages.

                We will begin trekking on a steep trail. Further, we will trek on the bowl-shaped glacial formation. On the way, we will get to see stunning views of Annapurna Ranges (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri Peaks (8,167 m) and Mt. Kanjiroba. We will then descend steeply and ascend towards a ridge to reach Panglanka Khola. We might also get to see blue sheep and snow leopards on our way. The trail from here takes us to Danigar where we will stay overnight.

                  We will trek on the snowy trail and ascend towards Baga La Pass located at 5,190 meters. The trail will go through rhododendron bushes and includes rocky section. We will cross Baga La Pass and begin descending on a steep trail. On the way, we will come across stunning waterfalls and huge rocks on which we will see Tibetan mantra where written. The trail from here will take us to our last destination of the day, Yak Kharka where we will stay overnight.

                    Today, the trail will be comparatively easy and short. The trail will present enchanting views of mountains. We will ascend towards the Phoksundo Lake and on the way, we will see a striking waterfall. From here, the trail goes through pine and yellow birches and reach Ringmo village where we will stop for the day.

                      Today is our rest day at the Ringmo village. We will spend the day exploring the village and spending time near the Phoksundo Lake. We will also go on the small hike to the nearby villages and spend the rest of the day tasting the local food.

                        We will trek along the Phoksundo Khola and green vegetation. We will descend all the way down to the Chepka. On the way, we will see another beautiful waterfall and walk on the flat land. We will stay overnight in Chepka.

                          Today, the trail is going to be long yet present us impressive views. The trail goes through small herbals plants and several small settlements. We will descend all the way down to the Dunai River and from here, we will ascend towards Juphal where we will stay for the night.

                            After having breakfast, we will take a flight back to Nepalgunj. On the same day, we will fly back to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we will head to the hotel. The rest of the day is free for us. In the evening, we will stroll in the vibrant streets of Thamel and end our day with a delicious farewell dinner.

                              Tradition & Culture in Dolpo

                              Dolpo is mostly influenced by the Bon Po and Buddhist culture. We will get to witness ancient Tibetan Buddhist shrines, chortens, prayer walls, centuries-old monasteries, and kaanis. We will interact with locals and also experience their lifestyle, tradition, and culture. You will be shocked by a few of their practices like having the same wife for all the brother in a family, feeding the dead body to a vulture or throwing them into a river. Besides, that people residing here are one of the kindest and most welcoming so don't feel shy to interact with them. Moreover, the isolation of this region has contributed immensely to conserve the cultural heritage and tradition for centuries.

                              Accommodations

                              We will be staying in 2 or 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj. During the Dolpo Circuit Trek, we will stay in teahouse. Teahouse is basically a combination of hotel and lodge. The room will be small with little furniture, bed & blanket. All the accommodations are on a twin-sharing basis. On special request, single rooms can be arranged in the cities. However, single rooms might not be available all the time due to the limited service on higher elevations. Please understand that the services in the teahouse will be very basic and also all the teahouse does not come with attached washrooms.

                              Meals & Drinking Water

                              In Dolpo Circuit Trek, we will enjoy authentic Nepalese food with few other cuisines like Tibetan, Indian. Meals will be served as per the menu of the teahouse. Beside that you can find bars, bread, cookies, butter tea, extra on the trail but, remember as the elevation get higher, the cost also gets high. In Kathmandu and Pokhara you will only get breakfast. There will also be welcome and farewell dinner for you.

                              Drinking water can be easily found everywhere. You can get hot water from the teahouse and fill in your bottle everytime it gets empty. So, do carry a reusable water bottle with yourself. We request you to not buy mineral water bottle on the way as it will help in preserving the region. Moreover, you can also carry water purifier tablets or SteriPen with yourself to purify the water.

                              Dolpo Circuit Trek Difficulty & Physical Fitness

                              Dolpo Circuit Trek is a difficult trek. The trails are not challenging in terms of technical climbing but, do includes 5-7 hours of walk each day. Therefore you need to be passionate and in good health. Trekking to the higher altitude always demands average physical fitness, positive attitude, and a strong determination. If you have any previous hiking or trekking experience it would be great but, it's not mandatory to go on Dolpo Circuit Trekking.

                              Other than that, if you have any kind of health related issues then do consult with your doctors before booking the trip. In case of any medical history, we highly recommend you to inform us so that any future event can be tackled without having any issue.

                              Best Season to go on Dolpo Circuit Trek

                              Spring (March to May) and Autumn ( September to October) are the best seasons to go the Dolpo Circuit Trek. We can also go on this trek in Monsoon (June to August). Dolpo is situated at the rain-shadow of Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba due to which the region receives very little rain, while the rest of the parts of the country experiences massive rainfall.

                              Dolpo Circuit Trek Permit

                              Dolpo is one of the restricted regions of Nepal, and tourists are required to get certain permits to enter in this region. Besides that to go on trekking in Nepal you need to get special permission from the Government of Nepal, and also required to get TIMS card (TIMS cards is not needed if you have immigration permit).

                              Following is the list of permits for the Dolpo Circuit Trek:

                              Dolpo restricted area permit for foreigners: USD 10 per person for the first 7 days & USD 7 per day thereafter.

                              TIMS permit: 1,000 NPR (Around USD 10)

                              TIMS entry permit fee for SAARC nationals: 600 NPR (Around USD 6)

                              There is also Rs. 1000 entry fee for the Shey-Phoksundo National Park.
